The Super Museum, located in Metropolis, Illinois, the officially designated “Home of Superman,” began its operation in 1993, showcasing the lifelong dedication of collector Jim Hambrick. Hambrick started amassing Superman memorabilia in 1959, eventually moving his extensive collection from California to Metropolis in 1985, a process that took eight years before the museum officially opened on Superman Square. The museum remains open daily, serving as a prominent cultural attraction for the community.
This unique institution houses over 70,000 items, offering a comprehensive look at the Man of Steel’s enduring legacy across various media. Visitors can explore a vast array of Superman toys, original movie props, promotional materials from films and television series, and one of the few surviving George Reeves Superman costumes. The exhibits, which are frequently updated to encourage repeat visits, are organized by different eras and portrayals of Superman. The Super Museum holds significance for the local community by drawing thousands of visitors from around the globe annually, contributing to the city’s identity, and serving as a central hub for the yearly Superman Celebration.
