Nerd Alert: Memphis operated at 1061 S Cooper St in Memphis, Tennessee, from its soft opening in September 2020, followed by a grand opening in May 2021. This unique establishment served as both a retail space for 1980s and 1990s nostalgia, retro horror, and various “nerd” culture gifts, as well as a dedicated arcade. Co-owned by Tyler and Melissa Oswald, who relocated from Chicago, the venue aimed to provide an authentic arcade experience with a “free play” model, where a flat entry fee allowed unlimited gaming.
The arcade featured a collection of vintage coin-operated games, including classics such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Dig Dug, Centipede, and pinball machines like X-Men and Godzilla. The owners curated a space designed to evoke nostalgia with ’80s music and blacklights, emphasizing the use of original arcade hardware. Nerd Alert quickly became a family-friendly community hub in Cooper-Young, offering a gathering place for enthusiasts of retro gaming and pop culture before relocating to Collierville at an unspecified later date.
