Operating in Wilmington, North Carolina, since July 2003, Cape Fear Wine & Beer has been a long-standing fixture in the downtown community. The venue, initially opened by Lector Bennett, expanded its footprint around 2009, moving to a larger 3600-square-foot location at 139 North Front Street, which significantly increased its capacity and beverage selection. Under the leadership of Maaike Brender A Brandis, who became President in 2006, the establishment cultivated a distinctive atmosphere, described as a blend of a German beer hall, British pub, record store, and tattoo parlor, reflecting a punk rock and DIY ethos.
Cape Fear Wine & Beer, now also known as Cape Fear Spirits & Beer, has consistently offered a diverse selection of craft beverages, growing from 19 rotating taps and over 300 bottles in its earlier years to 25 beers on tap and over 300 varieties of cans and bottles today, including cask ale and craft cocktails. Beyond its extensive drink offerings, the establishment has provided various attractions, including arcade games such as NBA Jam Tournament Edition, Marvel Vs. Capcom, Street Fighter EX2 Plus, and Gauntlet Legends, alongside other bar games like darts and pool. It has fostered a community hub by hosting events such as trivia nights, Randall Infusion nights, and “Beer Church,” where patrons could collect themed glassware. With knowledgeable, often cicerone-certified, staff, Cape Fear Wine & Beer has established itself as a respected and integral part of Wilmington’s craft beer scene.
