Suttree’s High Gravity Tavern, located at 409 South Gay Street in Knoxville, Tennessee, opened its doors to the public in June 2012. Conceived by husband-and-wife team Matt Pacetti and Anne Ford, the establishment quickly distinguished itself as a dedicated craft beer bar with a focus on high gravity selections, a niche that was largely unaddressed in Knoxville at the time. The tavern’s name pays homage to Cormac McCarthy’s novel “Suttree,” which is notably set in Knoxville.
Beyond its diverse array of craft beers, Suttree’s High Gravity Tavern cultivated a distinctive atmosphere by integrating vintage pinball machines and arcade games, contributing to its eclectic charm. It later expanded its offerings to include a popular ramen menu and features live local music and trivia nights. The venue also encompasses Harrogate’s Lounge, a connected sister arcade bar featuring games like Galaga, Skee Ball, NBA Jam, and additional pinball tables. Suttree’s High Gravity Tavern remains a lively neighborhood gathering spot in downtown Knoxville, known for its welcoming ambiance and its role in fostering a connection within the local community.
