Aladdin’s Castle, situated at 7580 Crestwood Blvd within Birmingham, Alabama’s Century Plaza Mall, served as a prominent entertainment hub for the local community for decades. While the Century Plaza Mall first opened in 1975, the Aladdin’s Castle arcade became a notable fixture within it, likely opening around the same time as the broader Aladdin’s Castle chain began its national expansion in 1976. The arcade offered a classic mall-based gaming experience, featuring a rotating selection of coin-operated video games, pinball machines, and prize games. It was known for its lively atmosphere, complete with neon signage and ticket redemption counters, and hosted birthday parties and high-score challenges.
As part of the wider Aladdin’s Castle chain, which was acquired by Bally Manufacturing in 1974 and later by Namco Operations in 1992, the Birmingham location provided a consistent source of entertainment during the golden age of arcades. For many in Birmingham, Aladdin’s Castle at Century Plaza was a cherished social gathering place and a significant part of their youth, often mentioned with nostalgia in discussions about the mall. The arcade ceased operations when Century Plaza Mall officially closed its doors on May 31, 2009, bringing an end to a local recreational landmark.
