The Central Florida Zoo, originally established as the Sanford Municipal Zoo in 1923, began its history with a small collection of animals donated by the local fire department. The zoo underwent a relocation in 1941 to a site now occupied by Sanford City Hall, before moving to its present 106-acre location along Lake Monroe on July 4, 1975. Under the initial direction of Jack Hanna, it became known as the Central Florida Zoological Park. In 1986, the institution achieved accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a mark of its commitment to animal care and conservation. Expanding its scope, the venue officially became the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens in 2007.
Today, the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens remains a vibrant community resource, offering a range of attractions beyond its diverse animal exhibits. Visitors can experience the Wharton-Smith Tropical Splash Ground, ride the Little Florida Railroad, or engage with the Seminole Aerial Adventures’ ziplines and ropes courses. Interactive opportunities such as giraffe feedings, rhinoceros encounters, and a Wild Explorer VR Experience further enhance the guest experience. As a not-for-profit organization, the zoo serves as a significant educational and conservation leader, providing programs and events that inspire community engagement and a deeper understanding of wildlife and natural habitats.
